I'm claiming the caregiver credit for hosting an adult relative with a physical or mental infirmity. May I claim the reduction for disabled or infirm dependants (Ontario Tax Reduction, line 55) even though the infirm dependant is not eligible for the disability amount?
Yes, as long as you can prove that the dependant is infirm. UFile does not calculate the reduction for disabled or infirm
dependants in situations where "Do not claim disability amount" is selected on the "Dependant's infirmity and disability" data entry form.
Please contact our Support team If you are in this situation and you have a positive amount on line 60 (Ontario tax) of schedule ON428. They will help you determine whether claiming the reduction for disabled or infirm dependants impacts your tax return and if so, provide you with information on how to adjust your tax return to obtain this amount.

May I claim the federal or provincial disability amount (line 5844) when also claiming fees for full-time care in a nursing home?
The same rule should apply on federal line 316 and provincial line 5844. That is: the disability tax credit cannot be claimed if you are claiming fees for full-time care in a nursing home.
To ensure the Disability Credit is not claimed where fees for full-time care in a nursing home are, visit to the Disability section and change option "Claim disability amount" to "Do not claim disability amount" to the question "Are you eligible for the disability amount on line 316".
