As a student in post-secondary education, you don’t see the point in filing a tax return while you are in school. You don’t make enough money to be taxable (earned less than $15,000/year), so you figure you don’t need to file your taxes.
But you are missing out!
Whether you received income from a summer
job, a scholarship, a research grant, or a Registered Savings Plan
(RESP), you should file a return even if you won’t owe any taxes.
If you paid payroll taxes for your summer/part-time, you will be refunded those taxes on your tax return if you are not taxable. You will likely be eligible for benefits such as the quarterly GST credit as well; but you can only claim them if you file a tax return.
You will also need to file a tax return to record your unused tuition credit for future use (carry forward) or to transfer to your parents.
So, by filing a tax return, you can get money today, and in the future through your tuition carry forwards, and it’s absolutely free to file! You have nothing to lose!
To be eligible to file for FREE:
You must be a resident of Canada, have tuition fees and have attended a post-secondary school for at least one month during the tax year being prepared. You must also be designated as the FAMILY HEAD (the primary member of the family) for purposes of your tax file in UFile ONLINE.
