CVITP Frequently Asked Questions

Contact your CVITP regional coordinator for the CVITP activation key you need for the current tax year.

One (1) CVITP activation key provides the capability to prepare 999 returns for electronic filing (EFILE) or paper filing.

You can use UFile for Windows back to tax year 2003. Links to download the previous years are present on the CVITP Home page.

Each year is a separate program which requires an Activation key for that year. Contact UFile Support via the Support Contact Form to obtain the Activation keys you need.

Note that UFile for years 2005 to 2003 runs only on a computer set up with Windows XP and Internet Explorer 7.

Usually you enter your EFILE registration information (in settings EFILE-NetFile setup) only once after activating UFile with your CVITP activation key. UFile then remembers your information, including your EFILE number and password.

Should you work in a public environment, like a library, the Clear all button (bottom left on the EFILE-NetFile setup window) enables you to clear all your EFILE data. The Clear Part A button enables you to clear your EFILE number and password only.

CVITP volunteers are not allowed to NETFILE their clients' returns. They must use EFILE.

CVITP volunteers should not use UFile CVITP to file their own personal tax returns.

They have the following options:

1. Use UFile for Windows and NETFILE their returns
   In order to use NETFILE with the UFile program, a volunteer needs to purchase UFile for Windows at one of our retailers across Canada or at our UFile Shop.
   A Standard activation key, which provides NETFILE capability, is associated with the UFile for Windows product.
   All that is required then, is to add the key to the already installed UFile CVITP program.
   
   
2. Use UFile PRO and EFILE their returns
   Volunteers who are also professional preparers and use UFile PRO can file their personal returns with UFile PRO.
   
   
3. UFile ONLINE is also available.
   
   
4. Use another software

To add the Standard activation key, open your UFile program.
Click on settings at the top right, then click Tax return counter.
Click Add extra returns. Enter your activation key and click Activate key.

You must change your EFILE-NetFile setup (in settings ) in order to NETFILE your personal returns. Select "Taxpayer preparing his/her own tax return" as "In what capacity are you preparing tax return?", then click Save.

The program will close down and restart in NETFILE mode.

If you are currently using  Windows 11, and you are experiencing problems with Auto-fill my return

Older versions of UFile relied on Internet Explorer to access Auto-fill my return. However, with the recent release of Windows 11, Internet Explorer is no longer included.

You can install the latest update of UFile with added support for the Microsoft Edge browser.

Download the latest update from https://www.ufile.ca/products/cvitp by clicking on the relevant tax year.

Select the downloaded file, click to install, and follow instructions.

Additional Notes

• There is no need to uninstall the program before.
• Automatic Updates will not provide the update, you must download it from the website.
• Although this problem is more likely to occur to Windows 11 only, prior versions of Windows (10, 8, 7 ) may also be impacted. If so, follow the above-mentioned instructions to install the latest update.
